St Peter's officially launches at 'Development Day'
3rd October 2016
An exciting, new and innovative ‘virtual college’ has been launched to offer training and support to Christians throughout the Diocese of Sheffield.
St Peter’s College is a learning community for mission and ministry and will grow and strengthen a culture of discipleship in churches across the region. It will do this by equipping lay and ordained people to grow the church by offering training and resources in discipleship. This will complement what local churches are already doing.
A new website, brochure and brand was launched on Saturday, 1 October to 500 people attending the annual ‘Development Day’ event at St Thomas’s church, Philadelphia. St Peter’s is a part of the Diocese of Sheffield and operates not-for-profit.
The college does not exist in one place as a building or institution, but as a community where people can attend a range of courses, meet and learn from others and share useful resources and ideas online. It is not just about short-term training but has a focus on life-long learning and formation. Ultimately; it is a community of those wishing to grow in their Christian faith and the service of God.
Courses are offered in areas such as: youth and children’s ministry, worship leading, pioneer ministry, spirituality, church finance, communications, theology, safeguarding and leadership skills.
It is thought that this is the first time a diocese in the Church of England has developed such an innovative and accessible learning resource in this way. Speaking at the launch Dr Christine Gore, Principal of St Peter’s College said:
"St Peter's is a milestone in the life of the Diocese of Sheffield, and possibly even within the Church of England. We are pioneering something that hasn't been done in this way before, it is a way of supporting and enouraging not only those who are in ministry, or training for ministry, but all those who want to grow in faith and discipleship."
Peter Burrows, Bishop of Doncaster added:
“It is really exciting to be launching St Peter’s College nearly three years after the concept was first introduced. Our church members and clergy already show an amazing commitment to personal and professional growth and this is vital for the health of the church. I hope that the new College encourages more people to explore the range of courses offered, in a supportive and accessible way.”
