A Place of Empowerment and Involvement of Lay Members

Part of the bank of parish support resources in response to Mission Action Planning (MAP) process.  This page offers you a range of resources to help you with questions covered in this section of the Mission Action Planning tool. Some are within our own website but we have also included links to good outside sources. As we become aware of other useful materials, we will update this page.

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. (1 Cor 12:4-6)

In From Anecdote to Evidence research shows that lay invlovement and good quality lay leadership is linked to growth. (p12)

As a part of their support to parishes that are implementing their MAP tool actions the Parish Support Team organised a taster session to help parishes think about Growing Lay Leaders.  The resources on this page incude a copy of the powerpoint images, audio of the talk and links to the resources that were mentioned.

Many parachurch organisations and training institutions also run courses that can empower Lay people in their ministries.

  • The Church Pastoral Aid Society (CPAS) produce a number of resources to help with church leadership including :
    • Growing Leaders as a course which helps identify and grow Lay leaders in a church.
    • Mentoring Matters is an easy-to-use pack with eveything you need to start a church-based mentoring network: indentifying, equpping and resourcing members.
    • Lead On is a monthly church leadership email that CPAS produce.
  • The London Institute of Contemporary Christianity (www.licc.org.uk) aims to equip Christians for whole-life discipleship in the world. In particular this includes the workplace, the 'frontline' for much of the week for many church members (see their Work Forum section).

Discovering Spiritual Gifts

  • Online Survey. You might find this 80-question survey a helpful way into exploring the ministries described in Ephesians Chapter 4 (apostle, prophet, teacher, evangelist & pastor). There are other online surveys available but many of them require you to register your details before you receive the results. This survey asks you to rate various statements as 'rarely', 'sometimes' or 'often' true for you and then provides some analysis of the results. It might at least give you an idea of the area(s) of ministry that seem most natural to you.
  • Church Pastoral Aid Society has an excellent brief document that describes what is meant by spiritual gifts, how we might explore them, and provides good links to additional resources. Access it here.
  • YOUR SHAPE - Your Shape for God's Service.  A six-session course from the Diocese of Carlisle for established Christians.  Focussed on building the Kingdom of God, not on self. Download the full course for free here
  • Building Church Net. Follow this link to a page called 'Gifted to Serve', which provides another tool to help church members identify their main area(s) of ministry, as well as a number of other links.

Small Groups

Some people have been asking about resources for those running small groups. Resources on the Internet seem generally to be relatively old or come from quite large churches in the USA (such as Saddleback) that make them harder to apply in our context. Cell UK has some material. There is a new resource produced by Emmaus that might be of help:
