There is an urgent need to focus on children, young people and their parents and a challenge to identify how the church can best invest in people, programmes and strategies which will encourage young people actively to continue exploring faith
The Diocese of Sheffield offers excellent training for this vital work through the Aurora Youth programme.
Aurora Youth is designed for those already doing youth work in their local church, who love the young people they work with, but have had no formal youth work training. It is designed for people who could commit to a monthly, Wednesday evening training session with three full-day Saturdays spread across the year, with some online learning between sessions. Aurora Youth is an 8-month ecumenical course for anyone over 16-years-old seeking practical, hands-on training with a creative approach to assessment through portfolio submissions.
If you are considering becoming a youth leader or developing your knowledge and skills further, you should start with a discussion with your church leader.
You would then go on to apply for the 8 month Aurora Youth programme. The course covers the following modules: Youth Ministry & the Youth Worker, Understanding Young People & Youth Ministry Practice, Managing the ministry. Completion of a number of assignments will allow you to gain the St Peter's College Certificate.
There are a number of network gatherings that would keep you in touch with course leaders and importantly other youth workers in the area to share ideas and resources. You would also be expected to undergo Level C2 Safeguarding Training.
